Wall Street doubled down on its losses on Thursday, just a day after financial markets closed at their lowest point in nearly six years. Investors sold shares as they watched Washington try to deal with a bailout for the automakers.
Analysts said worries about the automakers are only one of many concerns for the market and uncertainty about the overall economy was battering stocks. At the close, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 445 points or 5.5 percent. The broader Standard & Poor's 500-stock index was down 54.14 points or 6.7 percent. | |

As hope for an emergency bailout faded Wednesday for American automakers, shares on Wall Street began to slide. The Dow Jones industrial average was down 427.47 points, or 5 percent, settling below 8,000, while the broader Standard & Poor's 500-stock index was 6.1 percent lower. the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index was down 6.5 percent.
